Dying Breath by Heather Graham

I'm addicted to Heather Graham's Krewe of Hunters books that involve a special team of FBI agents, the paranormal, some history, and romance. Dying Breath, set in Boston, is one of the best. It kept me anxious and turning pages the entire time I read it.

When Vickie Preston was in high school, she was babysitting when she was warned to get out of the house to save herself and Noah Ballantine, the baby. Vickie managed to get out just in time to evade a serial killer. It was the first time she was visited by a ghost, and the first time she met Griffin Pryce, then a Boston policeman.

Nine years later, Vickie's back in Boston, a published author and historian who specializes in Boston's history. Once again, there's a serial killer haunting Boston, called the Undertaker by the media. Women have been attacked, and buried alive in different locations. This time, the FBI's Krewe of Hunters has been called in, a group of agents with special gifts. They can talk with ghosts, or have dreams that help them track and identify killers. Special agents Jackson Crowe and Griffin Pryce have been sent to Boston. And, they show up at Vickie's door, looking for help because one of the clues mentions the name "Preston". The latest missing victim is Noah Ballantine's mother, Chrissy.

Dying Breath is a fast-paced, intense novel. The suspenseful novel has courageous, strong characters, including Vickie Preston. Those who enjoy paranormal elements will appreciate the intercession of ghosts, aiding the search for the Undertaker. The fascinating history of Boston only adds to the atmospheric story. While Graham has taken her Krewe of Hunters all over the U.S., to Civil War battlefields, New Orleans, Alaska, this story with the background of Puritans, smallpox epidemics, and creepy killers, is one of the best.

I'm on the hold list at the library for this. Unfortunately there are three people ahead of me.

This one is worth waiting for, Sandy. One of the best.

I haven't tried this series, but I think you just helped me decide to give it a try. Thank you!

And, Kaye? You can jump in with this book if you want. Most of them are not so much a series as an on-going premise.

Lesa, I think I mentioned in another post last week that I have not yet tried the Krewe series. Can I start with this one or do I have read from the beginning?

Grace, You can start with this one. There are actually only a few continuing characters. There's enough backstory to tell you about the Krewe. But, except for a few exceptions (not this one), most of the stories stand alone with a new agent and a new romantic interest. This one stands alone.

Thanks, Lesa. I will give DYING BREATH a try, then.

A lot of them done as trilogies, but I don't think it matters if you read them that way or not.

But, if she starts with this one, she's starting fresh - new characters. I wouldn't read the Alaska/cruise ship ones out of order, but they're separate from this. I actually wasn't as excited about the cruise ship books.

Hmmmm, seems a lot of us are interested in this book. I tend to be a completist, so I've purchase the audiobook of #1 in the series. Ratings on Goodreads were quite mixed, but somehow I want to get the premise from the beginning. However with so many books already in the series, if I like this, then I'll proceed to whatever one in the series that appeals for that book's subject rather than automatically proceeding to #2. Did that make sense? :) I'll break order on this series and enjoy each book as it stands. Hopefully deciding on which to read next will be a problem!

I don't know if I even read the first book in the series, Sandie. So, you'll have to let me know what you think.
