Ten Years...and Counting

On Jan. 6, 2005, I wrote my first blog post. Now, it's Lesa's Book Critiques, but at the time my blog was called Nikki's World. Why not? We all know how much Nikki loves books.

My blog was always intended to be a place where I could share my love of books, authors, and reading. That hasn't changed. Over the last ten years, I've written 3,700 posts. And, except for those few that celebrated family or vacation trips to places such as New York City, Santa Fe, New York City, Monterey, New York City..., these entries have been about books.

Thank you to all the publishers, publicists and authors who have sent books for me to read and review, or give away, over the last ten years. And, thank you to all the authors who have written guest posts here. I also appreciate a couple friends who have written guest reviews. Thank you. And, a big thank you to Barbara Peters and The Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale, Arizona, my favorite independent bookstore, and one that became home in the last four years I was in Arizona. It was always a pleasure to cover events at the Pen, and attend teas and author appearances. You don't know how much I miss The Poisoned Pen.

Most of all, thank you to all the readers who read Lesa's Book Critiques, and comment occasionally. Reading books is wonderful, but it's even better when I can share thoughts about books with all of you. You all have busy lives, and I know it takes time to bring up the blog, read the posts and comment. Thank you. I can't promise you I'll be writing about books for the next ten years. Look what has changed in our lives over the last ten years. I can promise you that as long as I'm writing here, I'll try to make Lesa's Book Critiques interesting, entertaining, and a book site that welcomes readers.

I think there might have been a misunderstanding, though, about my New Year's resolution. I'm not cutting back on the blog itself. What I am cutting back on is obligations. There will be fewer dates promised to publicists, unless it's a guest post. I'm not going to obligate myself to as many dates for reviews. Why should I be required to review something on a certain date? I want to still experience the joy of a book, rather than the feeling that I'm required to read it.

As I've said from the very beginning, my goal is to share my love of books and reading with all of you. So, thank you for the past ten years. And, here's to the start of year eleven. Hopefully, 2015 will bring wonderful, exciting books to all of us!

Lesa, wow, 10 years? Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your life and book insights with all of us for such a long time. We are honored!

And, me, I'd love to see Barbara come up with some kind of portal that I could use to just step right from Central Texas over to Scottsdale and in the door of the Poisoned Pen. I'd use it often. :-)

Congrats Lesa, that's been a big commitment for a long time! I enjoy discovering new reads here and hearing about favorites as well.

Thank you, Kay! Wow! If anyone could come up with that portal, it would be Barbara. She'd say she has it since we can see the events streaming online, but it's not the same. I wish she could come up with that, too. I miss the Pen.

Thank you, Bill. As long as I can share that love and joy in books, I'll try to be here.

Discovery, and favorite authors. Isn't that what reading is all about, Holdenj? Thank you for reading with me!

Lesa, I totally support your resolution. The joy of discovering new books and new authors on your own can't be underestimated. I do hope you will continue to write your blog for a long time to come, as I have not only discovered a lot of books and authors through your blog, but I feel I have also made a treasured friend. Congratulations on your 10-year anniversary!

Congratulations on 10 years with your blog! I don'manage to read it as often as I'd like, but I do like it a lot. You are a pleasure to know via the blog.

Margie, I'm so glad we had the chance to meet at LCC. You're right. I treasure some of the friends I've made online. When we finally meet, it's as if we've known each other for, oh, ten years or so. Thank you! I hope it remains fun for all of us.

Lesa said...

Thank you, Jody! I've met so many people via my blog. That's been part of the joy of it! That, and all the books and authors I've had the chance to share here.

Congratulations on this milestone, Lesa! While I haven't been here the entire 10 years, I certainly appreciate all your efforts to introduce new authors and authors new to me.

And thanks so much for the additional explanation on your commitment to the blog, not to dates.

Hi Lesa - this is just to prove that I'm here! I've read other well-known book bloggers saying the same thing as you recently - they have realised that they are putting themselves under far too much pressure to fulfill the demands & deadlines of publishers and agents, and as bloggers tend to be nice, conscientious, people, they don't like to feel they are letting anyone down - so they end up overburdened and overwhelmed (often doing far more than a paid reviewer would do). Many of these bloggers have said that they are changing their approach this year and reading what THEY want to read before they lose the love of reading for its own sake. I sometimes feel the same about my own reviewing (of arts events, etc) - but my daughters have told me to lighten up and stop worrying about what I haven't done - they say everyone promises to do more than they can actually achieve. Must be a Young Person's thing, as my age group take it all much more seriously - and maybe that's our problem as well as our virtue. Anyway, we all love you and your blog and will be happy to read anything you feel like writing, because your personality shines through everything you write, and that's worth much more than great long reviews of 'intellectual' books written to impress. I'll shut up now! Rosemary X

Thank you to two fabulous authors - Miranda James & Susan M. Boyer. Thank you for considering them insightful reviews. All I can say is, I try.

Lesa said...

Rosemary, I like your insight into the generations, and the difference between us and the younger generation. We find it harder to "lighten up" and not take it seriously. I'll always take it seriously. Thank you for that wonderful compliment that my personality shines through, and that's worth more. You never have to shut up! I appreciate the viewpoint from Scotland! Hugs, and, thank you, Rosemary.

Congratulations, Lesa! As I said before, "Do what you love and LOVE what you do" and it's obvious you love what you do!

Congratulations, Lesa! You're a vital part of the scene, and I hope you keep reading and writing about books for many decades to come! (Coincidentally, I believe my first mystery was published in 2005 - "Mew is for Murder" - I'll have to check on that!) - Clea

Susan said...

Lesa, thank you so much for sharing your love of books and for introducing me to so many new, fine writers. I have loved "coming along" on your journeys. May the next 10 years be as joyous.

Lesa said...

You're right, Patricia. I do love sharing books. In fact, when I talk to my om & sisters, we usually talk books as part of the conversation. It's just who I am!

Lesa said...

Clea, You're right. Mew is for Murder did come out in 2005, and I mentioned it twice that year - once as a mystery I read in July, and once as a debut mystery. I wasn't using the same format then. In 2006, I mentioned it again when I actually reviewed Cattery Row. Thank you!

Lesa said...

Thank you, Susan. I hope so, too! And, thank you for joining me on the journey.

Congrats on your 10 years. I love reading about books which otherwise I may never find out about them. Thank you for doing reviews, and I'm always happy to read some of the books you've written about.

Congratulations on 10 years! I only discovered your blog a few months ago; I'm sorry I missed the first nine and a half years! I appreciate that you discuss such a wide variety of books, and enjoy your thoughtful reviews. I have found new books and authors, and been lucky enough to win a contest. Wise decision to make sure you don't over-commit and to ensure you are still doing what you enjoy.

I'm late to the congratulations party, Lesa, but wish to add my thanks for this blog. It is consistently great, something that is not easy to pull off.
