The Day After

Sounds like a science fiction movie, "The Day After". In this case, it's the day after a relaxing Christmas. I spent five hours with friends, and some of the rest of the day talking with family on the phone. It was a good day, with not enough time to finish a 350 page book.

So what did you get that was book related? If you''d rather talk about what you're reading now, I'm listening.

Morning Lesa - I got a huge book about art, a DVD by Simon Schama called The Power of Art, 'The country housewife's book' (a Persephone press re-publication of an old book) and 'Toad of Toad Hall' - a play by AA Milne based on Kenneth Graham's book - a lovely old edition. And my younger daughter gave me fairy lights made from felt flowers that she had made herself - I've attempted to put their photo on Facebook.Elder daughter gave me a Moomintroll apron that says 'Food! Food for my Family!' - it's cute.

What were your gifts?

Good morning, Rosemary! I received a lovely faux fur hoodie with attached scarf and matching fingerless gloves, a watch, a gorgeous book box, a paper snowglobe with cats attacking a Christmas tree, slippers, a couple different types of notecards (I still do handwritten notes), a gift card to a bookstore, a plastic lid that can be used while cooking or for storage, a gift card to the movies, a cat cartoon a day calendar, an herbal sleep mask for sinuses. I know there's more, but without getting up to read the card (there's a cat in my lap), I can't remember offhand. Needless to say, it was a bountiful Christmas. I'm very fortunate. Hugs, Rosemary!

I was blessed with two very different books, one a book of devotions, and the other being TC Boyle's STORIES II. For the first time in a decade I did NOT receive a gift card to Barnes & Noble. That's good. I'm always intrigued by what my friends choose for me to read.

I had never heard of TC Boyle before - just looked him (?her) up on Amazon. Interesting.

Wow Lesa, you did get a lot of gifts - but I know you will have given a lot too. I also got notecards - Scottish Colourist ones from the Modern Art Gallery - as I too write notes. I love those cat cartoon calendars - and that snowglobe sounds brilliant. One of my daughters requested - and got - a ukulele!

We've just returned from a lovely walk around Aberlady Bay, which is a bird reserve and beach. The sunset was amazing.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Isn't it wonderful to get books, Naomi? But with all my books, a gift card is easier.

Were you trying to read the whole 350 pages in a day? I could never do that! I usually get about three books done a month. I mostly read cozy mysteries. Well, I got some cash for Christmas earlier this month and I had won a Barnes & Noble gift card so I bought a lap desk there (the one I wanted was out so I had to choose another) and two paperback mysteries: Quilt Trip by Elizabeth Craig and Battered to Death by Gayle Trent. I ordered six hardcover books from the Mystery Guild because they had a buy one, get one free offer on Black Friday: the two latest Mrs. Jeffries by Emily Brightwell, Mulled Murder by Kate Kingsbury, Knot What it Seams by Elizabeth Craig, Cat Nap by Claire Donally, and Curse of the P.T.A. by Laura Alden. Unfortunately, the last one had a torn page so I'm still trying to get that issue resolved.

My dad bought us a huge box of chocolates (Whitman's Sampler) and my mother gave me an eight- pack of Sharpies markers. Yesterday I went to Target and bought some Ghirardelli chocolate squares, peppermint bark and then some others in an upright tin. I'm gonna use the tin to put my rollerball pens in. The holiday food items were only 30% off and not 50% like they used to be after Christmas! I guess they're getting cheap. Same with the Christmas CD's. I also bought an old T.V. show on DVD, The Six Million Dollar Man (hadn't seen that in years). They had others and I almost bought the Love Boat too. I still have an Amazon gift card so I can get a few more items.

I am feeling deprived! While I gave books to both my husband and daughter, no one got me a book or a gift card for books. That's just wrong!! I did receive some lovely gifts, though.

I was trying to read the entire book in one day, Michelle. I can usually do that when I'm off. On a day I work, though, I can only get through 150-200 pages. Sounds as if you did well this Christmas! Enjoy the books and other treats!

Karen, Karen. You need to train your family to know what a reader really wants - the opportunity to get more books! I'm sure they did give you lovely gifts. Just not books. (smile)
