The Goddaughter by Melodie Campbell

Melodie Campbell's The Goddaughter is a fast-paced caper featuring a gemologist who happens to be "the Goddaughter" of a mobster in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It's a quick read, just 134 pages, with a protagonist whose family makes a mess of crime.

As Gina Gallo tells newspaper reporter Pete Malone, she tried to break away from the family and live her own life, but it didn't work out. She moved to Buffalo, but two failed kidnapping attempts and family pressure brought her back to Hamilton, where at least her family connections could protect her. So, when a delivery of gems goes wrong, and a man is killed, Gina is coerced into a simple delivery to Buffalo with the gems in the heels of her shoes. What could go wrong? With the handsome Pete along for the ride, and stolen shoes, it can all go wrong.

Despite the fact that this is such a short book, Campbell manages to develop the characters of Gina and Pete, while including a criminal escapade, romance, and humor. If you're looking for a quick read, reminiscent of the bumbling in a Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum book, you might want to try The Goddaughter.

You're welcome, Karen.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was at the library and The Goddaughter was on the shelf. I enjoyed the story but I'm not sure something I can read in about an hour should qualify as a book.

Many thanks for highlighting The Goddaughter on this site, Lesa! I appreciate your review very much.

Last week I signed the contract for The Goddaughter's Revenge, which will be out Fall 2013.

Thanks also for including the blurb about Rapid Reads. These books are designed with two purposes in mind: to provide a one hour entertaining read for adults who don't have a lot of time, and for ESL adults who wish to improve their English literacy. The line is popular in Europe for this purpose.

This one fills a definite niche..it was a quick read and a fun one. There are days when this is just what is needed between the more ponderous tomes we often read.

Oh, and I'm reading a ponderous one, Tina. You're so right.
