The Diva Digs Up the Dirt by Krista Davis

Krista Davis' last book, The Diva Haunts the House, was one of the best Halloween stories I've read, with all the Halloween suggestions. This time, though, she's outdone herself. Davis expertly plants seeds of suspicion in The Diva Digs Up the Dirt. Even Sophie Winston's boyfriend, Wolf, a homicide cop, is under suspicion.

When a strange woman shows up at Sophie's house asking her to look for her missing daughter, Sophie refuses, saying she's not a private detective. But, Mona pops up everywhere, even at Roscoe Greene's annual picnic where Sophie is the event planner. Sophie didn't plan for manure to be delivered just before the picnic, though, and it has Roscoe's household in an uproar. Afterward, Sophie was just hoping for a peaceful vacation at home.

It seems Natasha, the diva who is Sophie's neighbor, has other plans though. Natasha hopes to make a name for herself by being seen on national TV when the star of the popular show "Tear It Up" shows up in Sophie's backyard to tear up her gardens and backyard to build a garage. With Natasha and a TV crew working in her backyard, and Mona stalking her, Sophie heads for the peaceful sanctuary of Wolf's backyard, bringing him a gift of a rosebush. Digging up an old dead bush just plunges Sophie and Wolf into a nightmare as she uncovers a purse that belongs to Wolf's wife, the woman who has been missing for over four years. Wolf, who everyone suspected of killing his wife, disappears, leaving Sophie and her best friend, Nina, to sift through clues.

Krista Davis' latest mystery is a satisfying, complex story with multiple storylines. Plants, gardens, murder, and secrets are all carefully entwined in this enjoyable mystery. The story is poignant, but also funny at times. Sophie is forced to root around in the past to uncover a killer, hoping it isn't the man she's been spending time with. Wolf's past has always been mysterious, and his wife's absence hung over previous books. Now, in The Diva Digs Up the Dirt, Sophie Winston will have to unearth secrets that will change her life.
