Best Friends, Occasional Enemies by Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella

When Lisa Scottoline and her daughter, Francesca Serritella teamed up to write the column “Chick Wit” every Sunday for The Philadelphia Inquirer, I don’t know if they expected those columns to turn into three books. Best Friends, Occasional Enemies: The Lighter Side of Life as a Mother and Daughter, is the best collection of essays so far.

If you’re a mother or a daughter, you can probably relate to some of the comments the two authors make. Lisa assures us that “Motherhood has no expiration date.” Her “Mother Mary,” at 86, still controls Lisa’s emotions, although Scottoline was 55 at the time this book was written. But, she says this is “A book about the true-life laughter in the relationship between mother and daughter,” something I understand.

So many of the essays in this book hit home. Scottoline was married and divorced twice. Her essay, “We Are All Ferraris,” is about living single in middle age, and learning to enjoy it, living life to the fullest. Anyone who feels overwhelmed by the rapid changes in social media will appreciate Francesca’s essay, “Twit-Willow.” She writes that even those born after 1980 can’t keep up with social media. In “Security Complex,” Scottoline, who travels frequently, reminds us why security scanners and extra security in airports is important. Wouldn’t you like to arrive alive at your destination? And, Francesca has a message for a number of us in “Prepare for the Best.” How many of us expect the worst in every situation? Wouldn’t it be nice if we faced new situations expecting good things to happen?

Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella share every aspect of their lives, dating, aging, living away from mom, traveling together. And, they share their love for each other, their family, and their pets. Best Friends, Occasional Enemies is a treat of love and laughter.

Best Friends, Occasional Enemies is also available as an audiobook from Macmillan Audio, read by the authors. Here's the three minute introduction, read by Lisa Scottoline.

Sounds like great fun - can't believe this is the third one and I'm just hearing about them. Definite addition to the TBR list!

Liked the first, Karen. The second was so-so. Really liked this one.

I just bought this, I've enjoyed the previous two. And I would have bought this one just for the cover - could it be any cuter!

Isn't that a great cover, Ingrid? I liked it, too.
