Picture of Lies by C.C. Harrison

C.C. Harrison returns to the setting of her award-winning debut novel, The Charmstone, for another suspense-filled adventure. Picture of Lies takes investigative journalist Keegan Thomas to Monument Valley and the Navajo Indian Reservation for a shocking trip into the past.

When Keegan’s young daughter, Daisy, went missing, she turned her talents to stories about mothers whose children were kidnapped. It’s her devotion to that cause, and her own obsessions, that destroyed her current relationship. Needing a break, she headed to Monument Valley, with a picture of her grandfather, a doctor for the BIA, along with some unknown people, searching for a story of her family.

A few Navajo pointed out John Wayne and John Ford in the picture since they often filmed in Monument Valley. But, only a teacher, Jilly Wolf, was willing to help her. The other Navajo shunned her, or lied to her.  There was even an attempt to steal the picture she carried in order to ruin her quest. It took the murder of an elderly Navajo woman to force Keegan to realize someone wanted to keep secrets, and she was prying where she wasn’t wanted.

But, the Navajo aren’t the only one with secrets on the reservation. For some reason, Dante Covelli, an archaeologist, was suspicious of Keegan’s actions. And, it didn’t help when she had an accident near his dig site, and showed up unexpectedly. Despite his suspicions, Dante will be there for Keegan when she gets a call from the FBI about Daisy, and when all of her beliefs about her past implode at one time.

Harrison’s latest novel is a fascinating story of secrets. Keegan Thomas is caught up in webs of lies, and there are still unexplained stories at the end of the book. It’s a suspense story with romance, history, culture, and a vivid setting in Monument Valley. But, Harrison has created a woman who finds her own strength in the course of the book, a woman capable of navigating through the webs to reveal the fascinating stories in that Picture of Lies.

Even the last few pages will keep readers guessing, Elizabeth, but not inappropriately.
