This was many years ago and took a great deal of creativity and thought. It was memorable. He organized a cafe style setting with the lighting, music and atmosphere just perfectly. He knew that my favorite era was the 50's so he arranged all of the wonderful hits from that time which I adore. I was overwhelmed by this unique and emotional overture. It has never ended. We started dating when we were very young - early teens and the first flower he ever bought for me was a pink carnation for 50 cents from a flower-seller on the corner (people used to do that here in Austin). The night he proposed, he cooked me dinner (steak, potatoes, salad) and then pulled a box out the fridge that contained one pink carnation. We were still not very old (early 20's) and didn't have many extra funds. My engagement ring was hanging from the stem of the flower, up by the the blossom. The ring had belonged to his great-grandmother and he had the diamond reset for me in a very simple style. So, even today, when he wants to be extra special romantic, he brings me one pink carnation. It's not an expensive flower, but so meaningful to us, just like when he was 15 and bought me my first one. We just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary, but we've been together for almost 37 years. Thanks for having the contest and letting us read about happiness and romance!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9995206.post-12055772371002566722010-08-30T10:32:14.390-05:002010-08-30T10:32:14.390-05:00Linda & LSU Reader - What nice memories! He planned a surprise party, kept it a surprise, and my mother, sisters, and college roommate all flew in. Jim made all the plans with them, and never let out a word of it. Hubby and I talked on the phone frequently, but he never gave me a clue that there would be something special waiting for me at the hotel on Val's Day. He wrote me a poem and faxed it to the hotel. A poem. It was so sweet, so romantic. Frankly, it was so unlike my practical, engineer Hubby! That made it all the more special. I was 18 when I got married the first time and he was 19. On our first anniversary he volunteered us to babysit my toddler nephew and our lovely anniversay dinner was the drive through at McDonalds. I should have expected something like that when on our honeymoon on the way out of town he stopped at a Dog & Suds (don't know if they have them anymore, it's kind of like an A & W Rootbeer place) and we ate hamburgers and hot dogs. He sure was a romantic devil. However, when we were married he used to send me yellow roses all the time, for no reason. They were always my favorite color rose. I know this wasn't exactly the story you were probably looking for, but when I think of romantic gestures, I always remember the McDonalds drive through.

seriousreader at live dot comLinda Hendersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06496464041656744569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9995206.post-67930532443928872732010-08-30T05:55:42.116-05:002010-08-30T05:55:42.116-05:00Thank you, Louisa!
