Just check out the gorgeous cover of Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York. I kept seeing it listed as a "Best Book of 2013", so I had to search for it to see what I had missed. If you're a people watcher, you'll want to check out this New York Times #1 bestseller. It's filled with wonderful pictures of people on the streets and in the parks of New York City.
Brandon Stanton fell in love with photography in January 2010 when he was still working as a bond trader. When he lost his job in July, he decided he wanted to be a photographer. He took thousands of pictues in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia, posting them on Facebook, but it was when he ended up in New York City that he found his stride. He posted those pictures on Facebook, and then started a page and a blog on Tumblr devoted to "Humans of New York".
Anyone who enjoys people in all of their infinite variety and colors will love Humans of New York. Stanton interviewed some of the people, and just photographed others. The pictures are funny, touching, warm, thought-provoking. Most of all, I found myself smiling to see so many people willing to be themselves, no matter what other people think. And, every one of these people photographed is beautiful in their own way. Brandon Stanton took pictures with an open heart, and it shows in all of these pictures.
If you need a change of pace during this busy time of year, pick up Humans of New York. It just might make you take a second look at all of those people around you. It's definitely Brandon Stanton's gift to people watchers.
