As Gina Gallo tells newspaper reporter Pete Malone, she tried to break away from the family and live her own life, but it didn't work out. She moved to Buffalo, but two failed kidnapping attempts and family pressure brought her back to Hamilton, where at least her family connections could protect her. So, when a delivery of gems goes wrong, and a man is killed, Gina is coerced into a simple delivery to Buffalo with the gems in the heels of her shoes. What could go wrong? With the handsome Pete along for the ride, and stolen shoes, it can all go wrong.
Despite the fact that this is such a short book, Campbell manages to develop the characters of Gina and Pete, while including a criminal escapade, romance, and humor. If you're looking for a quick read, reminiscent of the bumbling in a Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum book, you might want to try The Goddaughter.
